How to Care for Sensitive Skin

Sensitive skin isn’t really anything more than thin skin. Because of its thinness, the skin is less tolerant of the elements and also the fragrances, dyes and other additives in some products, and it’ll need to be treated gently. You’ll know if you have sensitive skin because it’ll tell you by turning red or feeling irritated after applying certain skin care products. Sensitive skin also can react to changes in the weather, to the detergents you use, to skin care products containing alcohol and it will become wind-or sun-burned easily.

Caring for sensitive skin doesn’t mean you’ve got to take extra steps. You’ll still need to develop the same routines as you would for normal skin. The major difference is that you’ll need to pay more attention to the products you’re choosing. If you know you’ve got sensitive skin, it’s important that you select products that don’t contain any added fragrances or perfumes. Also look for the term “hypo-allergenic” on the label. Powder-based make-up may be better because it won’t contain as many additives as creams.

When it comes to cleansing, don’t overdo it! Sensitive skin needs only to be washed twice daily using a mild, non-soap cleanser, preferably one that is pH-balanced. Soap can cause dryness. While you may be tempted to exfoliate, skip this step. It’s too harsh and irritating for those with sensitive skin. A mild astringent is a good alternative for removing dead skin and bringing out your skin’s glow. However, if the astringent (or any skin care product) turns your skin red or causes discomfort, stop using it immediately.

Select make-up, moisturizers and other skin care products that are water-based instead of oil-based. And this advice applies to men as well. Even tough guys can have sensitive skin. If so, switching to an electric razor and choosing shaving creams or gels that don’t cause skin irritation, as well as after-shave products without alcohol, will be better choices.
